Homecoming Scotland will be a year long celebration of the world-changing past, vibrant present and inspiring future of the best small country on the planet.During this time individuals with links to Scotland will be invited to travel there in 2009 to converge for what promises to be a very exiting year.
This community of ‘AffinityScots’ are people who have been touched in some way by the country, whether it be through family ties; having previously visited, lived, worked or studied there; or are members of associations or societies with some kind of Scottish connection. The invitation also extends to people whose only Scottish link may be a love of Kilts or Whisky, of which there are bound to be many!
Scotland’s famous poet Robert Burns is one of the key hooks for the celebrations as 2009 marks the 250th anniversary of his birth. Today throughout Scotland and the wider world there are landmarks, museums and visitor centres all dedicated to is life and work. There will also be four other focal points, which will consist of Enlightenment and Innovation, Golf, Whisky and Your Ancestors. To promote this a constant call to action under the slogan of ‘Come to the home of…’ will be adopted, leading up to and during the year in question.
Providing guidance to the project is an Advisory Board made up VisitScotland, COSLA, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Scottish Enterprise and the Big Lottery Fund to name but a few. It is further hoped that independent businesses, individuals and groups will get involved where they can. The project will also work closely with some of the main festival and event organisers throughout Scotland to encourage them to capitalise on the main themes were possible.
Jo Wedlock, Homecoming Scotland’s Director of Communications and Public Relations commented, “Scotland is a modern and dynamic nation with a rich historic past which already makes it a popular holiday destination. There are many reasons to celebrate all that Scotland has given the world and Homecoming Scotland will encourage anyone who has an affinity with Scotland to travel there in 2009.’
