Caltongate

City councillors have given approval for the controversial ‘Caltongate’ project – the biggest development of the Old Town since the 12th century.
The Caltongate proposals include a cultural quarter, a flagship five star hotel and state of the art conference centre, office space, 200 homes, bars, restaurants and cafes, as well as a new street called ‘Parliament Way’ linking Princes Street to Holyrood.

The residential sector will include a range of desirable housing from studio apartments to one, two and three bedroom apartments, penthouses and family townhouses.

Niall Macdonald, director of Jones Lang LaSalle, said: “This development will act as the catalyst for bringing greater life and vitality to this area of the city.”

The development will create hundreds of jobs in the area and will increase tourism in the city.

Ralph Radtke, of Sofitel, the company that would run the new hotel, said: “We believe that the Caltongate development will help Edinburgh remain in the premier league of tourist destinations and we urge the City of Edinburgh Council to give their backing to the project.”
